For all the people who have the Code 193 error, the answer has ALREADY BEEN POSTED! Just search for 193, or look at the post on 2009-08-20 by Chet.
Before posting questions on support pages, at least do a FIND to see if someone already had the problem and solved it!
Just move the program folder into your c:\Program Files folder and run it from there. It works fine now. |

Also whats a good free converter for video formats?

It is guaranteed: 100% freeware! - for private and commercial use. No limitations, no watermarks, no adware, no spyware.
But after a long download and installation it turns out that the free conversion does contain watermarks. |

really fine converter, for FLV to AVI, especially. but aspect ratio is 4:3 - the fix TIOMKIN mentioned is for mpeg4 - will it work for flv-avi also? cant i simply adjust resolution in "advance settings" box? one of those should surely do it, i would imagine. |

Hi I have used several programmes from this site on several computers. And I would like to thank the site for such good work. I have had no problems with any of the softwear provided.
Unlike most sites there is no hiddern bits that comes up asking you to buy the programme half way through the conversion. They are all virus free and the programme are small which don't stall slower machines. I can't put into words how grateful I am as being a disabled person I can't efford expensive softwear to watch downloaded stuff off the net.
Once again thankyou.

No doubt this is a great program. But there are two important bugs. One is that the converted avi file does not display with the correct aspect ratio. Secondly, there is no option to select audio bitrate CBR/VBR.
Please fix these bugs in the next release. Version 1.2 appears to be more stable than 1.3. |

Installed MP4 to AVI 1.3 converter in mid July 2009 so video clips from new camera could be used in Windows Movie Maker. Program worked perfectly. I left the unzipped file folder in my download folder and created a shortcut on my desk top. I did not use the program again until August 18th. The program appeared to open normally until I clicked on the "Convert" button. The progress window opened followed by a window which read: "System Error. Code 193. %1 is not a valid Win32 application." I have Vista Home Premium and use the auto update feature. I thought I picked up a virus or my registry was messed up so I ran my virus checker and registry cleaner and removed and reinstalled the program several times with no luck. I finally checked the properties of each of the files in the converter folder and found that the four "program" files were being blocked by Vista. I unblocked each of the four "program" files but no luck. On a hunch I moved the converter folder into the windows program folder of my c drive and everything works again. This is great free program and I hope this info helps others who are experiencing this Code 193 problem. |

Does this program, or does it not, convert M4Vs into usable AVIs or MPGs that anyone knows of? Has anyone actually done this? And the reason you probably cannot uninstall this is because it was a zipped folder that was downloaded onto your computer somewhere and it does not install like a regular program. I would think that you would have to just delete the downloaded folder (zipped or extracted or all of the above) to get rid of it. but with todays toys, who knows what it is doing to our computers... |

@Jacek Pazera
Hi Jacek, have you noticed that when you encode to xvid strange flags are set? Flags that an encode with virtual dub doesn\'t set? The flags are:
AVID=AVI[D] droped frames: instructs the player to repeat previous frame.
effect makes the file unseekable on hardware players and send the sound out of sync.
DF= Duplicate Frame: This screws up timing on hardware players creating sync problems.
The files play fine on a computer but are incompatible with hardware players. I\'ve looked at the FFmpeg help but can\'t find how to disable these flags or even set them.
Why do these flags get set? They aren\'t needed and cause compatibility issues. |

Downnload this freeware program \' MKVtoolnix\'. It will allow you to demux your file. That is take it to bits. Delete all the junk you don\'t need and leave the video, then try again. If this fails then I have to conclude that the file may be damaged slightly.
good luck. |

There is a serious bug in the MPG conversion. The bug is that although the audio and size panels are greyed out, the encoder still references them. A work around is to select AVI, and match the size and audio you want by entering the details. Then switch back to MPG. Those settings will be used in the encode. The sound will always be AC3 but the bit rate/sample freq will be what you set.
I hope this works but you never know with BUGS. |

If you don't need the audio, then set the program not to copy the sound. Tick the 'do not copy audio stream' box. This may stop all those errors and allow the convert to happen. |

I think the problem you have is because this program expects stream #0.1 to be audio. There is no way (at present) to instruct the program to choose to work on streams other than #0.0 (video) & #0.1 (sound).
If you could pre-format the file to have audio in stream #0.1 it would work.
Please Jacek Pazera will you add this ability and fix the DAR bug?
Despite this it is still a very powerful program.

It seems to be the input format but there is no way that I can see to influence this.
These MP4 files cam off piece of medical video recording equipment and I wonder if there is something unusual about them. Any advice appreciated. |

To fix a bad aspect ratio encode, ie: 640x360 displaying as 4:3 squashed when using mplayer. Use the freeware program MPEG4Modifier and set the pixels to SQUARE. This corrects the bug.
I have tested this in a convert from mp4 to avi, it works.
@linda to get sound, don\'t use the auto settings, set them manually. Choose LAME MP3, set bit rate, sample Freq and channels can be left at AUTO. Ensure the tick box is EMPTY. |

I found a bug. Sometimes when you ask the conversion to resize, it wrongly sets the DAR flag to 4:3 even on a 16:9 encode. This is not normally a problem as most players ignore this flag. But MPlayer uses this flag and won\'t play the file properly.
Please will you NOT PUBLISH my ip address. I don\'t know why you do this. |

I downloaded this and as per the instructions, I placed all the files into a directory. There is no need to 'install' this. I ran it and it worked fine. If the output window scrolls to the top, then simply resize it.
I find this program very good. There are some presets missing; the ones for widescreen content, but these can easily be added by the user.
Full marks and a great effort. |

great program i really have to say its the only one i found that converts a whole file. Nice! the only problem i have with it is the quility after the conversion, the video becomes pixelated even with the bit rate set to the max. |

The Program converted my mp4 to avi just fine but nero vision could not read it. Therefore I was not able to burn to a DVD. Do you have any advice about this problem.
Thanks, Tex |

I've been battling for weeks trying to get an AVI file from a JVC Everio "mod" file set. Normally I just renamed it as mpg and made DVDs with Nero. However, after many years of annoyance with Nero usability I thought I'd trial AdobePremierPro (before emptying my pocket for a Macpro and FCS6). Damn the Adobe folk and their limited input formats wreckingthe usability of great products; eventually, I was forced to make avi files but with what ? I tried so-called convertors that failed to recognise mod/mpg files and one that made the video but dropped the audio (I was tempted to try synchronising audio :-{). I tried *THIS FREEWARE product* but gave up Friday as all the files errored and I spent the weekend seeking other ways - making a 50GB avi file using Nero export from my mod files. Unfortunately I hit "not enough local disc" problems and the response from apps to network files is rubbish and jerky under XP (which doesn't even drive the CPU network hard as it toys with me).
...SO, I tried this converter again having read the error logs...
ALL I CHANGED was to drop the AUTO-video setting and guessed at 1000 kbit/sec and ALL my files converted correctly at good resolution and with good audio.
Thankyou - now to test Adobe ware properly :-} |

Hi, good program. BUT...it worked on the first conversion. When I tried to convert another file I also got a "could not find file" message.
I tried moving it to another directory, and I also tried converting an entirely different file from the original directory where the first result was successful.
I'm going to uninstall and try re-installing.
However, the one that I did convert burned successfully to a dvd.
Regards,
Mark |

I just downloaded it to make movies from video games and other things that are recorded to my pinicle recorder. Despite the very minor bugs, this is a great piece of software! I think its the best mp4 to avi converter software around. Thank you very much for making my life easier.
Thanks,
Joe |

I downloaded this product and for some reason whenever i try to convert a video an error message pops up saying that it "could not find file" and it will not convert. Yet when i go to the folder the file is there and it plays. I have tried moving the file and the same thing happens. Any advice?!

So far, I've found only three minor bugs.
When conversion begins, a conversion window fails to show per cent complete (it remains at 0%) and the progress bar is never drawn. A useful enhancement would be two progress bars in the conversion window, one for the current conversion and the second for the overall progress.
The second bug is also with the conversion window: while one can scroll the conversion window, it keeps jumping back to the top. Continuous, pauseable scrolling of the conversion window would be better.
The third bug is related to the main program window. Since the conversion window has been opened as a modal window, it is not possible to scroll the file list in the main window. This is only a minor problem if one is trying to convert more than seven files at a time. The main reason to scroll the file list would be to view the status but one can more or less guess the current status from the conversion window. A useful enhancement would be for the file list window to automatically scroll forward from the eigth file onward.
As I said, these are minor complaints. The product does not seem that fast but that does not matter since the conversion process can be left unattended. The final results seem to be unflawed and that is more important than speed. Jacek Pazera's m4v to mpeg conversion software appears to be sufficiently robust. The design is reasonably intuitive. I'm happy to have found it. Oprah created some m4v files for her Eckhart Tolle ten lesson webcast series based on his book "A New Earth: Awaking To Your Life's Purpose"; unfortunately to use Nero Vision, it's necessary to convert these QuickTime files to MPEG format. Without the availability of product's like Jacek's freeware, one would have to pay Apple $30 to purchase QuickTime Pro. Probably nobody mentioned that to Oprah.
Thank you, Jacek, for a fine freeware product.

Gerry
